Correspondence of John M. Evans, an Evansville, Wisconsin, physician and pioneer,
chiefly for the years 1862-1863 while surgeon in the 13th Regiment Wisconsin Volunteer
Infantry, and later with the Medical Division of the District of Northern Alabama. Written
by Evans and others from various points in Kansas, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Alabama, and by
his wife in LaPorte, Indiana and Evansville, the letters are primarily personal but give
some information about life in the army and news of the war. A letter of Jason Evans, 1847,
recounts experiences in the Mexican War. Several letters in 1850 from students at Indiana
Medical College, LaPorte, and Rush Medical College, Chicago, contain information about
frontier medical training and practice. A physician's handbook of practice, 1860, is also
present, as is an account book of Dr. Evans. English
