Biography/History

Conservative Republican assemblyman George B. Belting was born in DeSoto, Wisconsin, on July 15, 1914. After graduating from Janesville High School, he attended the University of Wisconsin where he was active in student politics. He graduated with a degree in economics in 1936. Two years later he completed his law degree at the same institution.

During World War II Belting served in the Navy in the Pacific. After the cessation of hostilities he worked as a legal officer, returning to Wisconsin in 1946 to establish a law practice in Beloit. In addition to his legal work Belting was active in many civic organizations including the Beloit Historical Society, the American Legion, Izaak Walton League, Taxpayers League, Boy Scouts of America, and the Better Business Bureau. He began his political career by serving three terms on the Rock County Board. In 1956 he won his first term in the Assembly from the county's Third District. He then served continuously until his defeat in 1970. His committee assignments included vice-chairmanship of the Judiciary Committee and memberships on Municipalities, Joint Revisions, and Taxation.

Scope and Content Note

The George B. Belting Papers relate almost entirely to his career in the Assembly. Included are subject and political campaign files, microfilmed clipping scrapbooks, press releases, speeches, and constituent correspondence. Correspondence, which is chronologically-arranged by year, comprises the bulk of the collection (five boxes). The letters touch on a host of constituent and legislative concerns, but, unfortunately, the collection offers no subject or bill number access. The subject files contain notes, floor statements, and background information. Material of a purely informational character has been weeded, and as a result many of the remaining files are quite fragmentary. Most extensive is the file on Belting's involvement in the effort to improve Highway 15. The political campaign files include microfilmed clipping scrapbooks, which provide quite extensive coverage of both his campaigns and his work in the legislature; press releases; and speeches. The sole non-legislative material in the collection is a receipt book from his law practice.
