Biography/History
Creed C. Black, well-known journalist and editorial writer, was born in Harlan, Kentucky on July 15, 1925. He was educated in the public schools of Paducah, Kentucky, received a BS degree “with highest distinction” from Northwestern University in 1949, and an MA in political science from the University of Chicago in 1952. His career in journalism began as a high school student when he served on the staff of the Paducah Sun-Democrat. During World War II, he worked on the German edition of Stars and Stripes. After graduation from Northwestern University, he went to work as copy editor for the Chicago Sun-Times and the Chicago Herald-American. In 1950, he was appointed chief editorial writer, and later, in 1957, executive editor for the Nashville Tennessean. In 1959, he moved to Savannah, Georgia to become vice-president and executive editor of the Wilmington News-Journal in Wilmington, Delaware. In the spring of 1964, he resigned from this position because of a disagreement of editorial policy with the DuPont family, who owned the Wilmington papers. In the autumn of that same year he was hired by the Chicago Daily-News as managing editor, a post which he held until 1968 when he was promoted to executive editor. In January, 1969, he was appointed Assistant Secretary for Legislation in the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare.

Part 1 (U.S. Mss 93AF): Original Collection, 1943-19696.6 c.f. (16 archives boxes) The collection, 1943-1969, consists primarily of the private business files of Creed Black as a newspaperman and editor. It includes correspondence, newspaper clippings, office memoranda, printed and near-print material, notebooks, scrapbooks, and miscellaneous items. The files are arranged alphabetically by subject, retaining the folder titles used by Black. Material within folders is arranged chronologically by day where possible and practical, although items of a non-correspondence nature have usually been segregated to the backs of the folders. Much of the collection consists of inter-office memoranda concerned with technical and professional aspects of journalism such as editorial policy, and reporting and writing techniques. Of particular interest are the files on Black's resignation from the Wilmington papers, notebooks from his trip to Russia with the American Society of Newspaper Editors, and notes and interviews relating to his trip to the Middle East in 1958. Also of note are six scrapbooks of his editorial clippings from the Nashville Tennessean from 1950 to 1956. Selected List of Significant Correspondents: The correspondents listed below are to be found in the “General Correspondence” section (Box 3, folder 3-5) and in the “Fat File” (Box 2, folder 6) unless otherwise noted.
