Biography/History

Ben (Bernard) A. Riehle, Democratic representative of the First District, Marathon County, was born in that county's Town of Rietbrock, 15 May 1897. After completing an eighth grade education, Riehle operated a dairy farm and was associated with a number of milk, cheese, beef, and livestock cooperatives. He served in the Army during World War I, and later was a member of the county board (1941-1942). Riehle was first elected to the Assembly in 1954, and served until his death on 27 November 1967. His committee assignments included joint finance, state institutions visiting, interstate cooperation, agriculture, and assembly printing.

Scope and Content Note

The collection contains Riehle's constituent correspondence, and some bills and reference materials from the last three years of his tenure in office. Included in the constituent mail are handwritten or typewritten letters from individuals as well as printed statements from interest groups or organizations. Few of Riehle's responses to correspondents are present. Both general and topical files, relating to specific issues important to constituents at that time, are to be found. These included busing of parochial school students; education; fair housing; family planning and abortion; highway safety, 21-year old drinking and implied consent; oleomargarine; reapportionment; taxes; and trading stamps. The file of bills and reference materials contains legislative drafts and bills, reports, and other printed statements dealing with specific bills and proposed legislation.
