Biography/History
The Dunn County Historical Society was organized in 1949 for the purpose of preserving and strengthening the consciousness of our heritage. It is governed by officers elected by the board of directors who in turn are elected by the membership. Activities include annual summer tours of historical points of interest, operation of museums in what were the Tainter Family playhouse and the Hilkrest School, research projects, collecting of manuscripts, artifacts, and library materials, and others.
Scope and Content Note
The records in this collection reveal only a partial picture of the activities of the Dunn County Historical Society. They include a variety of materials--correspondence, clippings, minutes, questionnaires, a membership list, bylaws, etc.--but the files are all very fragmentary. For example, minutes are present only for 1962 and a membership list only for 1958.
A list of folder titles follows this description, but special mention should be made of the items filed under Dictionary of Wisconsin Biography. This folder contains correspondence of Dwight L. Agnew, a Stout University history professor and an officer of the Dunn County Historical Society, concerning biographical sketches of Dunn County people that he and his students prepared for the Dictionary. Included are notes and sketches on Michael Griffin, John J. Jenkins, John Holly Knapp, Stephen S. McCann, Charles D. Parker, George Bullen Shaw, James Huff Stout, Andrew Tainter, and William Wilson.
Accessioning records which originally comprised the contents of Box 1 were returned to the Dunn County Historical Society in 1979.
