Abstract:
Administrative files from the Division of Historic Preservation and the Division of Public History, which merged in 2005 to become the Division of Historic Preservation-Public History. Prior to the merger, Michael Stevens served as State Historian and Administrator of the Division of Public History, and Alicia Goehring served as Deputy State Historic Preservation Officer (then State Historic Preservation Officer) and Administrator of the Division of Historic Preservation. After the merger, Stevens served as State Historic Preservation Officer and Administrator of the new Division of Historic Preservation-Public History, until his retirement in 2013. Included are subject files, meeting materials, correspondence, monthly and annual reports, speeches, records on administrative issues, and records on various activities in which Stevens was involved.

Scope and Content Note: Administrative files, 1967-2003 (bulk 1990-2000), of State Historic Preservation Officer and State Historian, Michael E. Stevens. Included are subject files, containing meeting materials, correspondence, monthly reports, and speeches. The Voices of the Wisconsin Past book series is documented through correspondence, notes and other records. There are also records related to special projects including the Institute for Editions Historical Documents, Reading the Past into the Present, the publication Editing Historical Documents: A Handbook of Practice, and fellowship administration records. Also included are research files on The Family Letters of Victor and Meta Berger, 1894-1929, consisting of copies, transcriptions and translations of the Bergers' letters; and a book on the peopling of Wisconsin, including excerpts from publications, newspaper clippings, interviews, and letters taken from manuscript collections, typescripts, correspondence, and notes.

Scope and Content Note: Administrative subject files, 1991-2011, of Michael Stevens from his time as administrator of the Division of Public History, and Alicia Goehring from her time as administrator of the Division of Historic Preservation. When the divisions merged in 2004 Stevens became administrator of the new Division of Historic Preservation-Public History, and files from Stevens' role in this division are also included here (these files are interfiled with files from the old divisions). Included are divisional reports, inter-office correspondence, files on administrative issues, and records on the Association for Documentary Editing, Institute for the Editing of Historical Documents, Wisconsin Historical Society Press, Society membership, strategic planning, the Society's partnership with Wisconsin Public Television, and other activities in which Stevens was involved.

Scope and Content Note: Records are comprised of slides that represent different styles of architecture throughout Wisconsin (with some from other states). Images include floor plans, humorous graphics, mail order home options with images representing the finished products, International style houses, examples of the Art Deco style, and examples of the Prairie School style including structures designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Also included are roadside attractions such as restaurants, folk art, gas stations, signs, and motels, and samples of rustic architecture in the form of parks, resorts, and summer houses.
