Abstract:
Photographs and drawings pertaining to the division's evaluation of the effects on properties of historical, architectural, engineering, cultural, or archaeological significance by projects using federal or state funds or requiring federal licenses or permits. Records held by the Archives are of two types: 1) duplicate copies of reports about Wisconsin buildings and structures submitted to the Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) and the Historic American Engineering Record (HAER), and 2) similar files submitted to the Historic Preservation Division in compliance with legal agreements to which the division was a party. Most often these files concern historic structures scheduled for destruction.

Appendix 1 (PH Series 2273, 2011/194): Files Listed in Order by Case Number, 1976-2000, 2011
Note

The HABS/HAER files generally include copies of the report and photographic prints, but no negatives. Neither of the Wisconsin surveys is complete and the majority of the documentation pertains to reports filed after the creation of the Historic Preservation Division in 1976. For this period, the HAER documentation of Wisconsin bridges and railroad buildings is most complete.

The non-HABS/HAER files consist of documentary photographs and original negatives. Accompanying paper documentation varies; some files include measured drawings made before destruction and photographic copies of original plans. Many files have no supporting paper documentation. Most non-HABS/HAER files relate to bridges that were replaced by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. In addition, this category includes historic building surveys of the Prairie du Chien and Soldiers Grove flood plains prepared for the U.S. Corps of Engineers and several National Register applications that appear not to have been threatened properties. Well documented bridges include the Prescott Bridge, the McGilvray Road Bridges in La Crosse, and the Lake Park Bridges in Milwaukee. The construction of the North Avenue Viaduct, also in Milwaukee, is represented by historic photographs. Also of note is coverage of the Portage Canal and the Fox River Waterway, machinery in the Fisher-Fallgatter Mill in Waupaca, color slides of the original interior of Holy Trinity-Our Lady of Guadalupe Roman Catholic Church in Milwaukee, the Phillips Concrete Park, Olin Terrace in Madison (the site of Monona Terrace), and several railroad buildings.

The images are separately numbered within each folder. They are listed by case number, project name, location, and property type in the appendix below.

Additional records still in division custody consist of project descriptions, maps, plans, and the Historic Preservation Division's review comments and recommendations concerning needed actions. Building plans and specifications, facilities master plans, environmental assessments, and draft and final Environmental Impact Statements may also be present.

Photographs of the Rock River Generating Station in Beloit, Wisconsin taken by Dieter G. Floeter, in addition to architectural drawings and historical and descriptive data. This documentation was prepared as mitigation for the demolition of the National Register of Historic Places-eligible property. The plant operated from 1954 to 2008, and was demolished in 2016.
