Abstract:
Files concerning construction requests and projects at the Society building and at other Society sites, including specifications, bids, contracts, change orders, correspondence, minutes of meetings, drawings, schedules, reports, and other documentation. There are files for many small building projects both at the headquarters building and historic sites. Well documented are the 1954 and 1968 projects at the headquarters building.

This collection was received in multiple parts from the donor(s) and is organized into 13 major parts. These materials have not been physically interfiled and researchers might need to consult more than one part to locate similar materials.

Related Material

Blueprints and Drawings of Buildings (Series 949) dates from 1911 and concerns many of the same projects as does this series; other series concern the erection of the Society building and its wings including Building Commission Records (Series 941), Building Commission Blueprints and Drawings (Series 942), and Daily reports of the Inspector of Works (Series 2038).

The 1940s materials concern efforts to obtain additional space which culminated in remodeling in 1954. The 1968 remodeling is extensively documented but the other files are fragmentary.

Scope and Content Note: Building project files, 1967-1978, of projects at the Society headquarters building, Wade House, Circus World Museum, and Old World Wisconsin. Records include plans, specifications, bids, change orders, meeting materials, and correspondence. The project file on cleaning the stone of the original part of the headquarters building includes ten photographs comparing the color of the old and new stone. Also included are project requests, 1971-1981, submitted to the Building Commission; and agendas and meeting minutes for meetings held by the Building Commission, 1960-1971 and 1976-1978.

Also included are files of Jim Kirchstein of the University of Wisconsin-Madison's Division of Facilities, on completed telephone, security system, and fire system work; a total of 22 photographs of renovation work at First Capitol, 1989, and electrical work at Old World Wisconsin, 1995; and an 8 mm videocassette of footage of Pendarvis, 1987.

Scope and Content Note: Scattered planning materials, 1951-1984, for the State Historical Society of Wisconsin Museum building on the site of the former Wolff Kubly & Hirsig Building. Included are the design proposals for the Museum including correspondence and other material from Potter Design Group, the firm chosen for the project. Correspondence related to planning includes budget information, plans for moving exhibit material, construction schedule, and staff ideas for the new building. There is also program statement and exhibit planning material, and information on the history of the building. A few images of the Wolff Kubly & Hirsig Building, earlier buildings which occupied the site, and construction images accompany the collection.
