Biography/History

Fred D. Lord operated an abstract business in Ellsworth, Wisconsin, and in partnership with County Surveyor S. A. Carpenter, he prepared and published an atlas and plat maps of the county. He was appointed Register in Probate for 1900 to 1903.

Scope and Content Note

The correspondence in this small group of papers includes letters relating to the publication and sale of the maps and atlases, Lord's dispute with Carpenter and the break-up of their partnership, various political matters, and letters concerning titles to lands in Pierce County.

Correspondents include A. H. Lord, Pierce County sheriff in the 1880s and father of Fred D. Lord; Freeman H. Lord, Fred D. Lord's uncle who served as a member of the County Board, was elected to the Assembly in 1895, and later was a Congressman; County Judge Allen P. Weld; S. A. Carpenter; and various bankers, lawyers, land speculators, and publishing houses.
