Abstract:
Papers of Peacock, a Prairie du Chien, Wis., businessman, primarily concerning initiation, financing, construction, and completion of the Prairie du Chien bridge over the Mississippi River. Peacock chaired the local bridge committee. Included is correspondence with Senator John J. Blaine and bridge investors, minutes of the bridge committee and the chamber of commerce, architectural plans, and clippings and broadsides, plus miscellaneous business papers. The photograph album documents the construction and opening of the bridge, 1931-1932.

Biography/History

John H. Peacock, the son of Joseph and Elizabeth Tarrell Peacock, was born in Grant County, Wisconsin, on June 10, 1874. He attended district schools in Grant County and high school at Elk Grove. Before moving to Prairie du Chien in 1901, Mr. Peacock worked as a barber at Wauzeka, Wisconsin.

For more than thirty years Mr. Peacock was a dealer in American pearls at Prairie du Chien. He served as mayor of Prairie du Chien from 1927 to 1929, and for the next three years served as chairman of the local bridge committee. He was instrumental in seeing this bridge over the Mississippi River completed in 1932. He was a charter member of the Prairie du Chien Chamber of Commerce, president of the Prairie City Bank, chairman of the Crawford County Highway Department, and president and manager of the Prairie du Chien Sanitarium Hospital.

Mr. Peacock married Addie B. Millspaugh in 1897. They had two children, Beulah M. Koecke and Loren John.

Scope and Content Note

The John H. Peacock Papers, 1927-1933, are primarily concerned with the initiation, financing, construction, and completion of a bridge across the Mississippi River at Prairie du Chien. The collection includes correspondence, 1927-1933; architects plans and reports relating to the bridge; minutes of the Prairie du Chien Chamber of Commerce and Bridge Committee, 1928-1932; miscellaneous business papers; photographs; and clippings and broadsides relating to the bridge.

Mr. Peacock corresponded frequently with Senator John J. Blaine from 1927 to 1931. This correspondence, as well as correspondence with numerous bridge investors, is filed chronologically with the correspondence in Box 1.
