These records consist of five series: case files, an index to the case files, cancellation of eligibility cards, record of families receiving surplus commodities, and records of men enrolled in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC).
INDEX TO CASE FILES, cases opened 1931-1938. Arranged by municipality, the cards index the case files of individuals. Cases are numbered by family, and numbers remain the same for multiple members of the same family. Cards contain personal information about applicants and their families, including address, opening and closing dates of case file, and names and birthdays (or ages) of spouse and children. The set of cards is incomplete: approximately 30% of the case files do not have an index card, and some index cards do not have case files. Approximately 30% of the quantity consists of pink cards documenting case closures, in no particular order.
CASE FILES of persons eligible for work in WPA projects, circa 1931-1940. Arranged alphabetically by last name. Information in each case varies but often includes a (1) Certification of Eligibility giving basic personal information, whether the individual is receiving relief, individual’s birth date, citizenship status, and occupation; (2) Department of Labor Identification Card; (3) a Cancellation of Certification of Eligibility form, giving reason for cancellation; (4) record of relief received (e.g., date and type of clothing received). Case files can also include (1) Interview Form giving additional personal information, union affiliation, occupational skills, occupational classification, education, and work history; (2) Notice to Report to Work, giving type of work and location; (3) Termination of Employment, giving the reason; and (4) Correspondence with government agencies.
CANCELLATION OF CERTIFICATION ELIGIBILITY CARDS, circa 1938-1940. Arranged alphabetically. Cancellation of Certification Eligibility cards are also found in the main CASE FILES series.
SURPLUS COMMODITY RECIPIENT RECORD, 1936-1938. Arranged alphabetically by recipient. Records contain the date of delivery and the type of commodity received (e.g., 1 dozen eggs, 4# flour, 6 cans of milk), code (which may indicate the level of need), and type of assistance: Relief, WPA Supplement, Social Security, Resettlement, Other.
CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) ENROLLMENT: Outagamie County, 1933-1941. Arranged alphabetically by last name of laborer. If multiple individuals in one family were enrolled in the CCC, each had their own card, but they shared a family case number. Each card lists name and address of laborer, person to whom allotted earnings should be sent, that person’s relationship to laborer, and amount earned. “Case name,” occurring below “case number” refers either to the allottee of the laborer’s earnings, or to the spouse of the allottee. Also included are different camps and location to which the laborer was sent, the dates of enrollment and discharge, the type of discharge, and sometimes the reason. The “remarks” field occasionally gives the reason the person was enrolled in the CCC, such as “budgetary deficiency.”
