Abstract:
Oral histories (1999-2000) conducted by David Giffey, a photojournalist and activist, entitled “People's Stories of South Madison” in which twenty individuals from various walks of life describe their experiences growing up in South Madison, Wisconsin. The majority interviewed are African American and discuss the struggles encountered in school, employment, and housing. Asian, Hispanic, and European experiences in South Madison are also represented. The collection consists of sound recordings of the interviews as well as transcripts. In addition, there are digital copies of photographs (1966-1971) from a separate project entitled “Struggle for Justice: the Migrant Farmworker Labor Movement in Wisconsin,” documenting the living and working conditions of migrant farm workers in Wisconsin.
