Abstract:
Papers of Gilbert H. Doane, an Episcopal priest, director of the University of Wisconsin Libraries, University archivist, and genealogist, primarily documenting his unpublished biography of Jackson Kemper, the first Episcopal bishop of Wisconsin. Included are original sermons by Kemper; calendars, a card index, and other access tools to the Kemper Papers held by the State Historical Society of Wisconsin; and research notes and correspondence with members of the Kemper family and others such as Leslie H. Fishel and Clifford Lord of the State Historical Society of Wisconsin. There are a few talks and articles about Kemper, but no draft of the full-length biography. Doane's clerical status is represented by general mailings from the Diocese of Milwaukee, mainly 1952-1968, and clippings and information about individual Episcopal congregations and Episcopal clergy in Wisconsin. There is also correspondence with the Wisconsin State Genealogical Society and photographs related to Grafton Hall and Nashotah House.

Biography/History

Gilbert Harry Doane was born in Fairfield, Vermont on January 28, 1897, the descendant of a Mayflower family. His long identification with libraries began in high school with a part time position in the Springfield, Vermont public library. In 1918 he earned a degree from Colgate University. From 1918 to 1920 he attended the U.S. Naval Training School in Newport, Rhode Island. In 1921, Doane received his library certificate from the New York State Library School. He married Susan Howland Sherman in 1923, and they became the parents of two children, Cynthia D. Nickerson and John P. Doane.

Doane worked in library administration at the University of Arizona, 1921-1922; the University of Michigan, 1922-1925, and the University of Nebraska, where he also served as a professor, from 1925 to 1937. In 1937, he became the director of libraries at the University of Wisconsin. In addition, he served as the director of the UW Library School from 1938 to 1941. In 1957 he was designated as the first University of Wisconsin archivist. During Doane's nearly 20-year tenure, the UW libraries flourished. Doane was also instrumental in relocating the General Library housed in the State Historical Society to the new Memorial Library.

In addition to his library work, Doane had a clerical career. Although born in the Congregational Church, he became an Episcopalian during his service in the Navy during World War I. He became a deacon in 1943 and in 1956 was ordained to the Episcopal priesthood by Donald H. V. Hallock, bishop of the Milwaukee Diocese. In this capacity, Doane assisted with the services at St. Andrew's and Grace Episcopal churches in Madison. He also received an honorary doctorate from Nashotah House. Doane retired in 1962, and eventually relocated to Rhode Island. He died on March 7, 1980 after a long illness.

Because of his status as a member of the Episcopal clergy and an accomplished librarian and genealogist, the State Historical Society of Wisconsin contracted with Doane in 1945 to prepare a biography of Jackson Kemper, the first Episcopal Bishop of Wisconsin. From 1945 through 1968 Doane was involved in research for this project, completing a calendar and an index to the Kemper Papers at the State Historical Society of Wisconsin. However his biography was never published.

Doane did publish extensively about rare books and genealogy. His credits include The Legends of the Book, 1924, and About Collecting Bookplates, 1941. He contributed to the field of genealogy by serving as editor of The Prairie Schooner and American Genealogist. While in retirement in Rhode Island, he was editor of the New England Historical and Genealogical Register. Most notably, Doane's Searching for your Ancestors, 1937, is considered an invaluable research tool.

Scope and Content Note

These Gilbert H. Doane Papers primarily document Doane's research for his biography of Jackson Kemper (1789-1870), the first missionary of the Protestant Episcopal Church and the first Episcopal Bishop of Wisconsin. They also include some material relating to Doane's own career as an Episcopal priest and a small quantity of correspondence pertaining to his interest in genealogy, but nothing on his activities as a librarian.

Although Doane painstakingly researched his Kemper biography for approximately 20 years, his work was never finished and no draft narrative, even a draft of the twelve chapters that were known to have been completed by 1959, is available in the papers. Nevertheless, Doane's papers add substantially to the potential for research about Kemper. The collection includes chronologies, calendars, a card index, and other tools prepared to facilitate access to the Kemper collection at the Historical Society, as well as many research notes. Doane also carried on an extensive research correspondence with Kemper's granddaughters and other members of the family that captured valuable genealogical and anecdotal information about the bishop. As part of his research, Doane also identified copies of Kemper's outgoing correspondence held by other institutions and acquired photostatic copies. Although none of this correspondence is included with his papers, copies of a few Kemper letters from the London Library are present. Most importantly, the collection includes a large number of handwritten sermons, roughly 1819-1865, that were lent to Doane by the Kemper family. Because only a few of Kemper's sermons were ever published and no similar materials are included in the Kemper Papers at the Historical Society, this portion of the Doane collection strongly enhances the documentation about the bishop.

The papers are arranged as KEMPER RESEARCH, KEMPER MANUSCRIPTS, EPISCOPAL CHURCH PAPERS, WISCONSIN GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY PAPERS, and PHOTOGRAPHS.

The KEMPER RESEARCH portion of the collection consists of handwritten notes, research tools, and correspondence. The researcher is warned, however, that the utility of this portion of the collection is limited by Doane's faint, sometimes illegible handwriting. In addition to the notes on topics such as missionary work in the Green Bay area and the founding of Nashotah House, there are lists compiled by Doane on topics such as the ordinations and consecrations in which Kemper took part, genealogies of the Kemper family, and biographical information about Kemper's clerical contemporaries. Also notable in this section is a brief biography of Absalom Jones, the first African-American ordained in the Episcopal Church.

This section also includes brief articles and texts for oral presentations by Doane about Kemper. However, as noted above, although it is known that Doane completed at least 12 of his projected 30-odd chapters, no draft narrative of even this portion is included with the collection. Photographs gathered by Doane as part of his research have been separated to the Kemper Name File in the Visual Materials Archive.

The research tools prepared by Doane consist of a calendar of the Historical Society's Kemper Collection, that is, a description in chronological order of each letter in the collection. The calendar exists in several versions, including a card file, a handwritten draft (which is available only on microfilm), and a typed version, which is the most legible. The first calendar covers the years 1804-1838, or frames 2G1-18G138 of the Kemper Collection microfilm. The second calendar covers the years 1814-1834, or frames 4G7-13G66, and the remainder of the second calendar begins in 1838 and covers individual citations from 1806, or 18G139-150G76 – 161. The calendars include many informative notes about the items in question. Doane's handwritten card index to the correspondence provides access to individual names and institutions.

The research correspondence is alphabetically arranged, and it includes incoming and outgoing letters dating from about 1945 to 1965. The correspondents include churches, research institutions, and Kemper descendants such as Elizabeth Kemper Adams, Sophia Kemper Best, Lucia Kemper Durand, and William Poyntell Kemper. Bishop Donald Hallock of the Milwaukee Diocese is also represented. This correspondence also documents Doane's contract with the Wisconsin Historical Society and his research progress, including his attempts to secure funding from the Eli Lilly Foundation. Prominent correspondents here include Leslie H. Fishel and Clifford Lord.

The KEMPER PAPERS are a significant addition to the documentation about Kemper. The sermons are divided, as they were apparently by Kemper himself, into two segments: a numbered series and an unnumbered series of additional sermons and sermon fragments. The numbered series extends from 1 to 154, with about 45 sermons apparently missing. The period covered is 1819 to 1867. Although handwritten, the sermons are in excellent condition, and they contain a wealth of information on Bishop Kemper's religious ideas. Each sermon booklet also includes information on the dates and the places where the sermon was delivered. In addition to the numbered list prepared by Kemper, access to the sermons is facilitated by an alphabetical index of the topics and scriptural references which is appended to this finding aid as an appendix. These sermons were loaned indefinitely to Doane by Kemper's grandson, William Poyntell Kemper, and his great grandson, Jackson Kemper III.

The EPISCOPAL CHURCH PAPERS consist of materials collected and organized by Doane in his capacity as an Episcopal priest in the Diocese of Milwaukee from 1947 to about 1968. Included are mimeographed mailings from the diocese to its clergy; an alphabetical file of clippings, primarily from the 1950s and 1960s; and other information about individual Episcopal congregations and clergy in Wisconsin. The mailings cover such issues as the adoption of resolutions, issues of hierarchical governance, financial reports, canons and their alterations, summaries of the bishop's official acts, the bishop's calendar, and ordinations. The alphabetical files about the clergy concern individuals active in both the 19th and 20th centuries.

The WISCONSIN GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY CORRESPONDENCE includes correspondence from the early years of the organization's history, many of which relate to its relationship with the state and Milwaukee County historical societies and the activities of the women in its leadership. This period is undocumented by the separately catalogued WSGS records held by the Historical Society.

The PHOTOGRAPHS in PH 2681 depict students, buildings, and activities at Grafton Hall, an Episcopal school for girls in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, circa 1922. The photographs in PH 2962 include images of Nashotah House Seminary, Nashotah Mission, and Episcopal bishops of Milwaukee.
