Records of People's Video, a communications service founded in 1972 to provide technical training and public access programming for cable television in Madison, Wisconsin, in order to promote community dialogue and social change. The collection is largely composed of correspondence and grant proposals and other than unprocessed tapes and films there is little production material, although the photographs do document some productions. Of note are files on People's Video's involvement in the leasing of the Madison cable franchise to Complete Channel Television. Files on several related media organizations include Capital Media Associates, Feminists Against Media Oppression, and the Feminists Video Collective. The last-named includes some correspondence with feminist filmmaker Pamela Allen. Materials also document the organization's relationship to funding agencies, VISTA, and the Campaign for Human Development. English

Biography/History
People's Video was a collective in Madison, Wisconsin, which sought to use audio-visual media to promote community dialogue and social change. Although People's Video dated from informal gatherings in early 1972 to discuss media matters, incorporation did not take place until December 1973. Throughout four years of existence, activity primarily focused on two objectives: provision of public access programming and training of “communications advocates” for various organizations. Program production began in 1972 with the airing of the weekly Mondo Video on Viking Media Cable in Monona; later broadcasting switched to Madison's Complete Channel Television. Training programs were carried out by People's Video largely by means of funds granted under the Comprehensive Education and Training Act. Other financial support came from VISTA, which provided full-time community coordinators, and from video taping contracts. PV was also instrumental in the formation of the Madison Cable Television Advisory Council and the Madison Community Access Center, the staging of a Midwest Video Conference, and the leasing of Madison's cable franchise to Complete Channel Television.
Scope and Content Note
The collection consists of material pertaining to People's Video and several related organizations: the Feminists Video Collective, Feminists Against Media Oppression, and Capital Media Associates.
The PEOPLE'S VIDEO RECORDS, which are arranged as one alphabetical subject file, primarily consist of funding proposals. Most interesting of these are the files on involvement with VISTA and unfunded proposals submitted to the Campaign for Human Development and Madison's Human Resources Task Force. With the exception of the audio and video tapes, which are unprocessed, production materials are quite limited. However, there are files of project proposals, a log, and equipment and editing forms. Even for Mondo Video, PV's longest-running program, the materials are only fragmentary. The general correspondence is also quite sparse, with exchanges with Complete Channel Television over various disagreements being of greatest interest.
Of the alphabetically-arranged RELATED ORGANIZATIONS series, files on FAMO and FVC, which were outgrowths of People's Video, are largest in size. These include correspondence with other feminist filmmakers and broadcasters such as Pamela Allen and reports and clippings pertaining to FAMO's media images survey project. Also of note are the files on Capital Media Associates, a company apparently formed by some PV members to provide videotapes of court proceedings.
