Biography/History

Ernest Hein was born November 22, 1888 in Pomerania, Germany, the son of August and Johanna Teidel Hein. Ernest (Ernst) came to Tigerton, Wisconsin, with his family in 1891, at the age of 3. Sena Elina Midthun was born February 26, 1887 in Norway Grove, Wisconsin. The Heins were married June 17, 1914, and had two daughters: Violette (Mrs. Frederick Gundlach), born September 18, 1916; and Lucille, born June 11, 1915. Ernest was a machinist for the Scanlan-Morris Company of Madison from 1919 until 1929. Around 1930, the Heins opened a small bakery at 2506 East Washington Avenue in Madison. In 1934, the business known as “Hein's Home Bakery,” was located at 1353 Williamson Street, where it remained until about 1948 or 1950. After closing the bakery, Ernest did carpentry and odd jobs, including the building of several homes in Madison and Monona, until his retirement in 1963. Ernest Hein died May 2, 1971 in Madison, and Sena died July 6, 1975 in Platteville, Wisconsin.

Scope and Content Note

The collection provides an incomplete documentation of the personal and financial life of Ernest and Sena Hein, and the operation of their small bakery. The papers have been arranged into two sections, Hein and Midthun Family Records, and Hein Bakery Records. Most of the papers cover the years 1930 to 1971, with a few items of earlier date located throughout.

HEIN AND MIDTHUN FAMILY RECORDS include biographical items such as a baptismal certificate, a Midthun family reunion book, and correspondence, 1931-1964. Also included are financial records comprised of record books of assorted dates for car, personal, and trip expenses, and for Ernest's odd jobs; paid household bills, 1938-1970; and church pledge records, 1948-1970. This series also contains insurance records, 1916-1970; legal papers, 1919-1955; estate papers; drivers' licenses and car registrations; Ernest's personal journal, 1943-1968; Sena's recipe book, circa 1900; and a baby book for their daughter Violette, 1916.

The HEIN BAKERY RECORDS section includes record books of “Supplies Used Daily,” 1933-1937; inventory books for 1944 and 1948; Social Security payroll books, 1937-1948; a “List of Bakery Fixtures,” undated; and a record book of “Cash Payments” and “Reconciliations,” 1932-1948. Also included are photographs showing the storefront, window displays, and products coming out of the oven.
