Scope and Content Note
The Hesseltine papers document the professional career and personal life of a prominent American historian during the middle twentieth century. They provide insights and commentary on academic life at a major university and demonstrate the inter-relationships of the national community of historians, from the point of view of a man who always regarded himself as an outsider in both groups. A large correspondence spanning forty years shows the daily concerns and work of a university scholar and traces some of the trends, issues, and controversies in American historiography. Especially significant are letters and papers relating to Hesseltine's students, for he trained a half dozen of the most important American historians of a generation. The working papers concerned with historical studies are extensive and illustrate the methods of a productive research scholar. Hesseltine was a wide-ranging thinker and writer. His papers include evidence of serious study and reflection on many of the public issues of his day as well as questions of history and higher education. The collection is arranged in five series: Biography, General Correspondence, Subject Correspondence and Administrative Papers, Course Papers, and Research and Writing Projects.
The BIOGRAPHY series consists of papers that document major events in Hesseltine's professional and personal life. It includes diplomas, bibliographies, resumes, legal papers and contracts, articles about Hesseltine and his students, reviews of his books, and announcements of his addresses.
The vast majority of the GENERAL CORRESPONDENCE series has been organized in a single chronological sequence. Enclosures, memoranda, notices and minutes of departmental meetings are interfiled with the correspondence. A few letters, as indicated on the contents list below, are filed with related research materials and writings. The correspondence is especially useful in looking at the workings of the University of Wisconsin's history department and the historical community in general. Prominent correspondents include Stephen Ambrose, Howard K. Beale, Charles Beard, Frank Byrne, Vernon Carstenson, Bruce Catton, Robert D. Clark, Arthur C. Cole, Marcus Cunliffe, Richard Current, Merle Curti, E. E. Dale, Anna Mae Davis, Chester Easum, Leslie H. Fishel, John Hope Franklin, Frank Freidel, Larry Gars, Ulysses S. Grant III, Fred Harvey Harrington, John D. Hicks, Jim Dan Hill, Richard Hofstader, Merril Jensen, Paul Knaplund, Isabel La Follette, Robert Marion La Follette, Thomas LeDuc, Clifford Lord, Joseph McCarthy, Donald McNeil, Curtis Nettels, Allan Nevins, Louis Pelzer, Earl Pomeroy, Benjamin Quarles, James G. Randall, Sam Ross, David Smiley, Alice Smith, Kenneth Stampp, Norman Thomas, David Van Tassell, Bennett Wall, T. Harry Williams, William Appleman Williams, Carl Wittke, Hazel Wolf, C. Vann Woodward, Richard Younger, and Roman Zorn. See Appendix I of this finding aid for a list of these writers' letters.
The SUBJECT CORRESPONDENCE AND ADMINISTRATIVE PAPERS series consists of files of letters and papers concerning associations, committees, and commissions with which Hesseltine was involved; others concern particular research and editorial projects. Some administrative papers and memoranda are interfiled with the general correspondence.
Papers organized under RESEARCH AND WRITING PROJECTS consist of bibliographies, print and near print materials, copies of documents collected in research work, notes, outlines, drafts, manuscripts, typescripts, proof sheets, and publications. All forms of material for book length projects have been grouped by title of the book or by subject. The papers for the shorter studies are arranged by form: notes, articles, reviews, and reprints of publications. Printed and near print materials, newsletters, pamphlets, broadsides, and circulars, have been arranged by subject. Clippings by and about Hesseltine, his students and their work have been photocopied and filed with related materials, either under articles and reviews or in the biographical file. No other clippings were retained.
