Biography/History

In 1908, the Attic Angel Association, a private charitable organization, sponsored the first visiting nurse for Madison. The service grew, but continued to be under the auspices of the Attic Angel Association until 1950. At that time the Visiting Nurse Service was incorporated separately. Therefore, much of the early history of the Visiting Nurse Service is closely tied to the Attic Angels.

Scope and Content Note

For information on the early history of the Visiting Nurse Service, the researcher should consult the Attic Angel Association Papers. The Visiting Nurse Service began keeping separate files in 1924. Most of this material before 1942 consists of Nursing Committee reports and minutes of their meetings. The minutes kept from 1942 to 1950 include minutes of the Attic Angel Association meetings. The articles of organization of the Visiting Nurse Service are filed with the minutes for October, 1950. A separate section entitled “Correspondence and Reports with Particular Historical Significance” covers the years 1926 to 1956. The minutes and correspondence are arranged chronologically and each is preceded by a subject index.
