Biography/History

During the period covered by these Papers Alan Gartner was chairman of the Boston, Massachusetts, area chapter of the Congress of Racial Equality. This position enabled his membership in CORE's National Action Council and in the Council's Steering Committee. In 1964, he served as treasurer of CORE, and in 1965, he resigned from the Boston chapter to assume a CORE staff position as director of its Fund-Raising Department. By 1968, he had left CORE and was associated with the New Careers Development Center at New York University.

Scope and Content Note

These Papers entirely concern Alan Gartner's association with the Congress of Racial Equality's national office and National Action Council. They consist almost entirely of mimeographed and similarly reproduced reports, minutes, and memoranda, most apparently supplied to Gartner for his information as a member of the National Action Council. Information on a wide range of CORE's activities is included, with particular emphasis on the organization's financial problems. Arrangement of the Papers is alphabetical by folder subject title.

Related Material

Information on Alan Gartner is included in at least two other manuscript collections held by the State Historical Society of Wisconsin: the records of the Boston chapter of CORE and those of CORE's national office. The Boston records contain little direct information on Gartner but reflect what must have been his concerns as Boston chairman. The national office's records include correspondence with him and other materials mentioning him; these are located in a variety of files. (The Gartner Papers undoubtedly contain many duplicates of items in national CORE's Papers. A limited amount of comparison was done and the duplicates discovered were discarded from the Gartner Papers.)
