Biography/History

Cecil Edward Burleigh was born in Wyoming, New York, April 17, 1885. He was a composer, violinist, and educator. He studied violin and composition in Berlin, Germany, from 1903 to 1905, and in Chicago until 1908. From 1908 to 1919, Burleigh taught violin and composition at colleges in Denver, Colorado, Sioux City, Iowa, and Missoula, Montana. He became professor of violin, composition, and thesis at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wisconsin in 1927; he retired from this position in 1955.

Scope and Content Note

The papers consist of correspondence and biographical material. The general correspondence is almost entirely incoming and contains letters from editors, agents, and admirers; much of it is related to Mr. Burleigh's career as a professional musician. Filed separately is a series of letters, 1950-1967, written by Mr. Burleigh to his sister, Clara. These letters contain numerous references to his music and music in general. The biographical materials contain a biographical sketch of Burleigh written by his sister at the time of his retirement; a detailed list of recitals, orchestral performances, and compositions; and reviews of Mr. Burleigh's work.
