Biography/History

Robert W. Dean was born in Tomahawk, Wisconsin, on July 20, 1923. He was a student at the University of Wisconsin from 1941 until his enlistment in the U. S. Army Air Force in 1943. He returned to school in 1946 and received his L1.D. in 1950. Until his election to the State Senate in 1959, he practiced law, presenting cases before the U. S. Treasury Department and the U. S. District Court of the Eastern and Western Districts of Wisconsin. In the Wisconsin Senate he represented the 29th District, which includes Marathon, Menominee, and Shawano Counties. He served on the Highway Commission, the Retirement Research Council, and as vice-chairman of the Legislative Council's Water Resources Commission.

Scope and Content Note

The Dean collection consists of correspondence and a subject file including reports on the legislative committees and commissions on which Dean served from 1959 to 1963. The correspondence, concentrated in the years 1959 and 1961, consists primarily of letters from his constituents in the 29th District, in which they expressed their views on such issues as state life insurance expansion, the reorganization of the court system, the University of Wisconsin budget, reapportionment, and various welfare bills.

The legislative subject file consists of the reports of the commissions upon which Dean served, especially those of Water Resources and Highways. It also includes an alphabetical file on certain bills in 1959 and 1961; these include bills on religious training, municipal annexation, tax simplification, pesticides, public transportation for public and parochial school students, and reorganization of state government.
