Abstract:
Papers documenting the legislative career of John R. Plewa, who represented southern Milwaukee County in the 20th Wisconsin Assembly district and 7th Senate district. Plewa was the author of the 1988 Wisconsin Family and Medical Leave Act, which influenced the federal act of 1993. Other issues covered include government support for private schools, opposition to abortion, transportation and juvenile delinquency. Papers include speeches, newsletters, results of constituent questionnaires, articles and editorials written by Plewa, press releases, subject files and political memorabilia. The largest portion of the collection is the subject files, containing bills, amendments, memos, notes, correspondence, and research materials. The collection also includes political memorabilia, such as nomination papers, sample ballots, campaign reports, advertising proofs and newspaper clippings, mostly from Plewa's 1984 campaign for state Senate, as well as campaign literature from other candidates, newsletters from other people and organizations, awards and correspondence.
