Biography/History

The Political Education and Action League (PEAL) was formed in 1962 as a county-wide organization of business and professional men and women united to participate in political campaigns at the local level. Although officially non-partisan in nature, the league's founders were political conservatives “concerned over the growing domination of the labor-liberal influence” in Milwaukee-area politics. PEAL thus became the alternative to organized labor's influential Committee on Political Education (COPE) and, in fact, has close ties to the Republican party and its candidates. Among its activities, the organization seeks out, endorses, and supports candidates for city and county elective offices, offers assistance in campaigning, and even provides campaign staff. In 1963 the League merged with a similar group, Your Stake in America, Inc., and retained the League's name. Governed by a board of directors, PEAL publishes a monthly newsletter, and holds rallies and meetings.

Scope and Content Note

Spanning only the early years of the League, the collection contains organizational and general papers, including copies of the Articles of Incorporation and By-Laws; a small amount of correspondence, much of which was mass-produced for the membership; information sheets; press releases; Xeroxed newsclippings; and miscellaneous materials. Most of the papers are photocopies. The organizational papers and press releases provide insight into the formation and activities of PEAL, while the newsclippings illustrate the League's advertising and endorsement efforts. A file of the PEAL Report, 1963-1966, and an issue of the PEAL Newsletter, June 1962, were separated to the Wisconsin Historical Society's Library.
