Biography/History

The St. John parish was founded in 1841 when Elkhorn was occupied by only a few buildings and fewer than 100 people. After meeting in the school for several years, a church was built in 1854 and enlarged in 1858. A rectory was built in 1876 and the church again enlarged in 1892. Always a small congregation with limited financial resources, the parish had great turnover of its pastors and often shared a rector with Delavan or other nearby communities. After World War II, the parish entered a period of growth and prosperity. A full time rector was secured in 1947, in 1956 a new rectory was built, and the church and guild hall were remodelled in 1968.
