Papers of a Price County, Wis., farmer and local historian including photographs of the Meier family about the turn of the century and in the 1970's; a farm ledger begun by Karl Meier and taken over by his son Roy in 1918; an essay by Meier on Germans and others who settled Price County in the l870's and l880's; and a “History of the Dairy Herd of the Spring Brook Farm.”

Biography/History

Meier was a Spirit, Wisconsin, farmer, logger, museum operator, R-H leader, town chairman, Price County Board member, and local historian. Born on December 26, 1902, Meier was a lifelong resident of Spirit (known as Brannan until 1923) in Price County. He and his wife helen raised six children (two adopted). In 1969 Meier arranged the move of the Albin Johnson log house, an 1885 Swedish home, to his property where it served as a museum of documents and artifacts of local farming, logging, and rural life. The house is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Scope and Content Note

Included in the papers are photographs of the meier family about the turn of the century and in the 1970s, a farmer's ledger 91910-1925), and two local histories written by Meier. The ledger, started by Karl Albert Meier, Roy's father, was taken over by Roy in November 1918. It contains information concerning the breeding and due dates of cows as well as monthly accounts. One of the histories documents the growth of a Spirit dairy herd beginning in 1887. The other describes the German settlement of the Spirit region beginning in the 1870s.
