Papers of a Barron County, Wisconsin state assemblyman, consisting of
campaign materials, correspondence, and an obituary. The campaign
materials include a newspaper clipping announcing St. Angelo's decision
to seek the assembly seat in 1960 and two campaign brochures dated 1960
and 1962 respectively. The correspondence comprises the bulk of the
collection and is composed of alphabetical constituent correspondence
and St. Angelo's replies for the years 1962-1963. Among the subjects
discussed are lowering the drinking age, the sales tax and oleo
margarine controversies, the problems of maintaining effective
education in northern Wisconsin, and retention of the Barron County
Teachers College in Rice Lake. English

Biography/History
Thomas St. Angelo, a Barron County assemblyman, was born on January
13, 1889, in Cumberland, Wisconsin. After attending the Cumberland
public schools, he received college-level training in law, engineering,
and agricultural economics from the La Salle Extension University and
International Correspondence Schools in Chicago. Following his
education, St. Angelo was employed in managerial positions in several
Barron County industries. After working for the Island City Bank and
the Barron County Federal Land Bank, he became a real estate appraiser
for the Federal Housing Administration and the Veterans Administration
in 1958.
St. Angelo was very active in the civic and political life of Barron
County. He served on the Palmer School Board (1920-1927) and on the War
Production Board (1940-1945). He was also the Barron County Red Cross
chairman and Republican Party chairman. In 1958 St. Angelo ran
unsuccessfully for a state assembly seat from the Barron district. He
was finally elected in 1960 and was re-elected for a second term in
1962. While in the state legislature St. Angelo served on the Transportation, Conservation, Agriculture, Contingent Expenditures, and
Legislative Council Water committees. He was defeated for re-election
in 1964.
St. Angelo returned to Cumberland and continued his job as a real
estate appraiser for the Federal Housing Administration and Veterans
Administration until his death on June 16, 1967.

Obituary. The Campaign Materials include a newspaper clipping announcing St. Angelo's decision to seek the assembly seat in 1960 and two campaign brochures dated 1960 and 1962 respectively. The Correspondence comprises the bulk of the collection and is composed of St. Angelo's constituent correspondence and his replies for the years 1962-1963.
