Biography/History

The Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church was founded in Beloit, Wisconsin, in 1882. In that year the Chicago A.M.E. District Conference sent traveling ministers throughout the region to preach and to organize people. The Rev. Jesse Woods came to Beloit and organized a group of 24 persons thus forming that city's first Black church. He later became their minister and remained in that post until 1886.

The original church, built in 1882, remained in use until 1952. Then the congregation undertook a construction program, and a new building was completed the same year. It remains in use today.

Scope and Content Note

The records of the Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church consist of a portion of a volume containing church-related minutes and reports and an anniversary pamphlet.

The volume is no longer intact. The segment which has been preserved contains minutes of official board meetings, and reports of quarterly conference meetings for the years 1904-1916. Accompanying these are several stewards' and trustees' reports for the same years. These records document the church's membership and financial activities including the church's income and expenditures.

The pamphlet was issued in 1972 to commemorate the church's 90th anniversary. It includes a short history of the church in addition to a pictorial look at the church, its members, and its various affiliated associations.
