Biography/History

The Greater Beloit Association of Commerce, a non-profit organization of business and professional people dedicated to furthering commercial and community enterprise in the Beloit area, was founded in 1927. Originally named the Beloit Commercial Club, the organization adopted its current name in 1960.

Among the Association's objectives are community development, business development, economic understanding, legislative action, and public relations. Through the years it has attempted to fulfill these responsibilities by promoting tourism and city planning, urging industries to relocate in Beloit, lobbying for tax reform, promoting highway planning beneficial to Beloit, and encouraging pride and respect in the city by means of community involvement projects. The organization played a large role in helping Beloit earn recognition as an “All-American City” in 1972 and is still pursuing its aims actively today.

Scope and Content Note

The records of the Greater Beloit Association of Commerce consist of minutes for the meetings of its Board of Directors, various committees and divisions, and its annual meetings.

The first eight volumes contain minutes for the Board of Directors, 1927-1972, and discuss such topics as the recruitment of new members, the planning of special events such as conventions and tournaments, and committee reports. These minutes also document the establishment of special divisions within the Association which were formed to accommodate special groups and their problems. These include the Retail Division (established in 1927), the Industrial Division (1927), the Better Business Bureau (1955), the Beloit Downtown Association (1965), and the Women's Division (1967).

The last four volumes consist of committee, division, and annual meeting minutes. Those of the Retail Division, 1927-1965, deal with the establishment of store hours; special sales such as Bargain Days, Dollar Days, and Spring Opening Sales; traffic and parking problems; and advertising. The Industrial Division's minutes, 1927-1929, 1952-1953, focus on the growth and improvement of established industries and the relocation of industries in the Beloit area. The minutes of the Community Relations Fund Committee, 1954-1955, discuss the donation and allocation of members' money to worthy community enterprises. Also included in one portion of a volume are minutes of the organization's annual meetings, 1927-1937.
