Biography/History

Early Norwegian settlers of the Town of Perry, Dane County, Wisconsin, organized the Perry Hauge Evangelical Lutheran Church in 1852. In 1887 their original log church was abandoned as the congregation moved to a new building about two miles east. The old building and cemetery were neglected until 1926 when a committee was organized to restore the church and cemetery grounds. Committee members were elected from the congregation. About 1954 the congregation ceased to exist and preservation functions were then assumed by members of the Perry Lutheran Church. In 1966 the Perry Hauge Log Church Preservation Association was formally incorporated.

Scope and Content Note

This collection is organized in two parts. Part I is the Original Collection which consists of materials microfilmed in 1973 and filed at call number Micro 503. Part II is Additions microfilmed in 1976 and filed at call number Micro 588.

Part I: Original Collection

This portion includes records of the Hauge Church congregation, of the preservation committee begun in 1926, and of the Preservation Association.

The congregation's records consist of an 1885 constitution; one volume containing typed copies of ministerial records, 1852-1887, including baptism, confirmation, marriage, and death records, plus miscellaneous other items; and one secretary's book containing the original constitution, minutes, and financial notes, and including a 1934 letter of resignation from Pastor John A. Houkom. Most of the records are in Norwegian.

The records of the first preservation committee are contained in one volume and date 1926-1967. A list of the volume's contents is filed before the volume and notes contribution records, minutes, and historical information among other records included.

The records of the Preservation Association include the articles of incorporation, bylaws, minutes, treasurers' reports, membership lists, and occasional correspondence.

Part II: Additions

The Additions consist of a microfilmed copy of a one-volume Ministerial Book, written in Norwegian and English, recording baptisms, confirmations, marriages, deaths, and communicants. This volume also includes a list of parish members and their families, a summary of worship services and other church activities, and a church constitution, 1885.

The typescripts in the original collection (Micro 503) are copies of information from this original record book.
