Abstract:
Series 1C: Pre-Incorporation Journal/Ledger, 1919-1920 and Series 2C: Corporate Financial Journals, 1919-1950 together comprise the general financial journals of the United Artists Corporation and some of its major subsidiaries. For ease of use, the two series have been microfilmed together on 18 reels of microfilm. The original volumes were destroyed after microfilming.

Scope and Content Note

No external information has survived to document the precise nature of this financial volume. It concerns financial transactions with such producers as Schenck and Talmadge, disbursements to studios and electrical and chemical companies, and payrolls and office expenses.

The volume is divided into five major sections:

  1. Receipts, disbursements: covering internal expenses and income.
  2. Petty cash.
  3. Purchases, sales; from and to film companies and producers. Contains columns headed “positive footage” and “negative footage” with adjoining column carrying associated dollar amounts.
  4. Journal.
  5. Ledger. The Journal and Ledger coordinate the entries with the previous sections on an account number basis.

Entries in this volume date from January 1919 to February 1920. No explanation presently exists for the fact that many of the entries predate the incorporation of United Artists.

Scope and Content Note

These volumes, together with the Pre-Incorporation Journal-Ledger (Series 1C), comprise the general financial journals of the United Artists Corporation (UAC, Delaware) and of some of its major subsidiaries. For the earlier years, the affairs of the corporation were of sufficiently small scale that the journals reflect day-to-day operations. Journals for later years restrict themselves to larger transactions, for the corporation had grown so large that the mass of detailed transactions was too great for inclusion in these general journals.

The major subsidiary corporations represented are United Artists Corporation-Illinois. UAC Canada, UAC Ltd., Allied Producers and Distributors, and UAC Mexico. Information for any particular subsidiary appears only occasionally; consult the reel list for the exact contents of each volume.

The volumes are in chronological or reverse chronological order. For the earlier years, two or more separate volumes were created - one for United Artists Corporation, Delaware, and one for the subsidiaries. The numbering sequence attempts to illustrate this division; UAC Delaware volumes were given individual volume numbers, while the subsidiary volume for each year had the same number with the suffix “A”. Beginning with Volume 13, each volume generally covers one year, and is divided internally into sections for UAC Delaware and for subsidiaries. Each section, in turn, is arranged chronologically by data (each data is that near the end of each month considered).

Each of these end-of-month-dated portions of the journals are some fifteen to twenty pages long. Brief information on the nature of each credit or debit is given. The “account number” column permits transactions to be traced back to the appropriate account-numbered page in the Corporate Ledgers (Series 3C).
