Biography/History

The Armentrout family lived near the McCormick farm in Virginia and George Armentrout seems to have farmed too. He also ran a sawmill for a time, had a partnership in a small business with Jacob A. Hanger, and had some investments in land, lumber, and mining. In later years he practiced law. His home after about 1900 was “Stuarts Draft,” Augusta County, Virginia.

Scope and Content Note

The Geroge W. Armentrout Papers are primarily financial records of Hanger and Armentrout of Staunton, Augusta County, Virginia, “Dealers in Saw-Mills, Wagons, Agricultural Implements, Gum and Leather Belting.”

More personal are the two folders of scattered correspondence from 1878 to 1922. They give a brief indication of Armentrout's interest in land and lumber, his law practice, particularly his search far the heirs of one Scarlet Daugherty, and the financial problems of his neighbor, L. S. Bryan of Vesuvius, Virginia. Also present are some personal financial records and one folder of genealogical information.

The Hanger and Armentrout records consist of some unbound materials and eleven volumes of accounts. Volumes 8 and 9 (1894-1907) are Armentrout's cash accounts with the firm of Hanger and Armentrout. Volume 10 contains Hanger's cash accounts with the same firm and volumes 11 (1881-1890) and 12 (1881-1892) show the Hanger cash accounts used in a legal dispute between Hanger and Armentrout. Some of Armentrout's correspondence also refers to this incident. Volumes 2-7 (1881-1891) are the business records of the firm of Hanger and Armentrout.
