Papers collected by members of the Tousey family concerning the research and writing of a petition seeking Federal recognition of the Brothertown Indian Nation of Wisconsin as a sovereign nation. Scope and Content Note

The collection includes material concerning historical and genealogical research about the tribe and its members; research grant application files; membership committee files; fragmentary records of tribal government; copies of the tribe's official newsletter, “The Brotherton Messenger”; information concerning other tribes' efforts to gain Federal recognition; news clippings and other printed material; and the personal correspondence of Philip George Tousey, Sr., Olivia Christine Nowell Tousey, and Harry Tousey.

Arrangement of the Materials

The papers have been left as they were organized by the donors. Researchers should note that folders are labeled with the Series (Roman numerals I-XII)/Sub-series(A-Z)/Part numbers (1-10) rather than labeled with the titles which appear in the box and folder list. However, the numerical filing system is given in the following list after the major sections. Researchers will have to look within the files to find the material described.
