Abstract:

Records, 1911-2004 (bulk 1952-2004), of the political office in Wisconsin of the United Transportation Union (UTU), a national union established in 1969 to consolidate into one body railway conductors, brakemen, locomotive firemen and engineers, railroad trainmen, and switchmen, all of whom had previously had their own unions. The Wisconsin Legislative Board exercised little direct administrative responsibility for state locals, instead it monitored state and federal legislation and the regulatory actions of the Public Service Commission and endorsed particular legislative candidates and provided campaign support. The records include organizational reports, correspondence of legislative representatives of the UTU and their predecessors in the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen (1950s-1960s) relating to endorsement of particular legislative candidates, complaints concerning work rules, and files from Wisconsin locals.

The records of United Transportation Union. Local 720: Records (Green Bay Mss 163) contain extensive information on the Wisconsin Central Railroad with which the state legislative representative was involved in the early 1990s.

M90-335	Part 1 (M90-335): Original Collection, 1911-1992 Physical Description: 5.4 c.f. (4 record center cartons and 4 archives boxes)  Scope and Content Note Records, 1911-1992 (bulk 1952-1992), of the political office in Wisconsin of the United Transportation Union (UTU), including agreements, by-laws, general correspondence, minutes of the State Legislative Board (incomplete, 1968-1984) and information on state reorganization meetings, detailed quarterly reports (1952-1978) of the legislative representative, notes, and financial information. The correspondence includes not only files of several UTU state representatives, but also the similar earlier files of W.E. McDonough and H.R. Johnson, the Wisconsin legislative representatives of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen during the early 1950s and 1960s. They operated in cooperation with the state legislative representatives of the other railroad unions as a Wisconsin Joint Board, and the files contain some papers about this cooperation. Much of the correspondence concerns endorsement and support of particular legislative candidates and various complaints concerning work rules and investigations. Recent correspondence of Thomas Dwyer consists of exchanges with Wisconsin congressmen, leaders of local 120 (La Crosse) and 311 (Milwaukee), and officers of the Burlington Northern, Soo Line, and Chicago and Northwestern railroads.
