Abstract:
Papers of Harrison L. Garner, a long-time alderman in Madison, Wisconsin, and his wife, Mary Parent Garner, documenting Mr. Garner’s studies at the University of Wisconsin, World War I service and Gas School instruction, American Legion activities, and civic interests including the Madison City Council. Mrs. Garner’s papers reflect her civic interests, including Badger Girls State and the State Board of Public Welfare. Also included is family correspondence and a small amount of material from the Garners’ three children. The photographs and negatives document the family and Harrison Garner’s service in the Wisconsin National Guard (1916).

Scope and Content Note

In addition to the Harrison L. and Mary Parent Garner papers, the materials relating to the Garner children (Margaret, Richard, and James), consist of school memorabilia and writings, Margaret Garner’s diary (1920-1930), and James Garner’s World War II incoming correspondence and Infantry Training School records (1944). In addition there are numerous photographs and negatives including portraits and snapshots of the Garner family and snapshots of Harrison Garner’s service in the Wisconsin National Guard during the Mexican Border War in 1916.
