Abstract:
Collected papers of Captain Lewis M.B. Smith (Summit, Wis.) who served in the First Wisconsin Cavalry; Company A; Smith enlisted on August 15, 1861 and mustered out on February 20, 1865. The papers include correspondence, letters and documents, transcripts, quartermaster reports, photocopied marriage and pension certificates and pension materials, muster rolls, three books owned by Captain Smith and a diary of Coleman C. Chubb. William Duffen, a teacher, compiled a list of book information and costs and a set of index cards with each member of the regiment and background on each card.

Scope and Content Note: The letter is postmarked Hamilton, N.Y. 18 (13?) Aug 1862, and addressed to: Mr. John T. Hazeltine / 1st Wis. Cavalry Reg / Company H. / Cape Girardeau / Missouri. Hazeltine was a saddler, in the First Wisconsin Cavalry, Company H, where Smith was Captain. Hazeltine died September 4, 1862 in Helena, Arkansas and never received the letter.
