Professional and personal
papers and films documenting the life and career of independent producer Ted Hope. The
collection primarily documents the business aspects and films produced by the distribution
companies, Good Machine and This is That, co-owned by Hope in the 1990s and 2000s. The
personal papers include college material, film projects from the 1980s and early 1990s,
notes for seminars given by Hope and other professional activities.

Biography/History
Ted Hope is an independent film producer of more than seventy films. He co-founded the
production company Good Machine with James Schamus in 1990, and they produced early films by
influential filmmakers including Ang Lee and Todd Solondz. After selling Good Machine to
Universal in 2001, Hope and colleagues from Good Machine founded the production company This
is That in 2002, which released titles such as Eternal Sunshine of
the Spotless Mind, Adventureland, and Super. Films released by Good Machine and This is That received
numerous awards and nominations at the Academy Awards, the Independent Spirit Awards, and
major film festivals including Sundance and Cannes. In 2010, Hope and his wife Vanessa Hope
co-founded a production company called Double Hope Films.
After This is That closed its offices in 2010, Hope became the executive director of the
San Francisco Film Festival from September 2012 to December 2013. He then led Fandor, a
streaming service for independent and international film, as CEO from January 2014 to early
2015. From January 2015 to June 2020, Hope was Co-Head of Movies at Amazon Studios, leading
the production and acquisition of original films.
Scope and Content Note
The collection is divided in to five series: Good Machine, This is That, Personal, Scripts,
and Films.
The Good Machine and This is That Series are both subdivided into smaller sub-series. The
Administation sub-series covers the overall legal, administrative and financial aspects of
owning and operating a film distribution company. The Development sub-series documents
relationships with directors and film projects the companies tried to produce. The Films
sub-series encompasses the various aspects of film production and distribution. A number of
films in each series have extensive coverage enabling researchers to track the life cycle of
a film from pre-production to release. The Good Machine series is further subdivided to
include information on two subsidiaries of Good Machine - Art Fear and Good Fear.
The Personal series documents Hope's life and career, not related to Good Machine or This
is That, from college to 2009. Included in this series are Hope's college notebooks,
pre-Good Machine film projects and employment contracts, interviews and publicity covering
his career, notes from the various seminar talks Hope gave covering aspects of the film
business, Academy membership materials, and much more.
The Scripts series are various scripts Hope received which had no notation indicating a
connection to either Good Machine or This is That.
The Films series run the gamut of interviews with Hope, an
interview series where Hope and Christine Vachon interviewed people in the industry,
presentations given by Hope, award presentations, as well as Hope's college film project and
short films by various directors including Hal Hartley, Nicole Holofcener, and Frank Grow to
name a few.
The collection also includes a few audio recordings which are interfiled in the paper
collections.
Administrative/Restriction Information
RESTRICTION: Because sensitive information, including cell phone numbers, email and mailing addresses,
EIN/Tax numbers for businesses, and other financial information is present in the
collection, researchers must sign an agreement stating they will not disclose or share
copies of material with sensitive information with others. Researchers will also need to
track the boxes and folders they access.
ACCESS TO AUDIO/VISUAL MATERIALS: Researchers wishing to listen to or view audio visual materials in the collection,
including DVDs in box 31, should contact the Wisconsin Center for Film and Theater Research
at least one month before their visit. Audio and videotape recordings must be digitized and
this process can take several weeks. Film prints must be retrieved from off-site storage and
inspected. Prints for films that are readily available on DVD or a streaming service are not
available for onsite viewing. Venues interested in borrowing a film print for exhibition
purposes should contact the Wisconsin Center for Film and Theater Research.
