Abstract:
Papers of Elizabeth "Betty" Boardman, author and pacifist, consisting of correspondence, news clippings, research notes and drafts, travel diaries, and photographs. In 1966, Boardman participated as a member of the pacifist Quaker Action Group, a group traveling by ship on the Phoenix of Hiroshima to provide medical assistance to the North Vietnamese. The United States government tried to block the group, but did not succeed until they returned and their passports were suspended. Boardman continued to advocate against the Vietnam War through speeches. In 1985, Boardman's book, The Phoenix Trip: Notes on a Quaker Mission to Haiphong, was published. The collection consists of research for the book, lectures and speeches, news clippings, pamphlets and newsletters, a travel diary from the trip, a scrapbook, campaign materials, and photographs from the book taken by Ivan Massar. Also included are tape recordings of Boardman talking about the Phoenix trip and interviews with the Phoenix crew.
