Abstract:
Papers, primarily 1976-2009, include published and unpublished writings of J. Quinn Brisben, who had been a high school teacher in Chicago and became a Socialist Party candidate for mayor of Chicago in 1975, vice president of United States in 1976 (with Frank Zeidler, former mayor of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, as the presidential candidate), and president in 1992 (with William Edwards of San Francisco). Published writings are primarily from socialist and literary journals; unpublished writings detail extensive travels in the United States and abroad, including Russia, Cuba, Eastern Europe and Central America. Other materials include correspondence, news clippings, two scrapbooks and campaign materials from the 1972 and 1991-1992 campaigns; news clippings, photocopies of photographs and other materials from his involvement in the disabilities rights movement, and a collection of political and campaign buttons. 45 photographs are primarily family- and campaign-related. Four videorecordings include an interview with Brisben and a visit with Studs Terkel.
