Abstract:
Papers of Betty Walker Smith, 1938-2000, a former city of Madison (Wisconsin) Republican alder and longtime advocate for civil rights, women's rights and children's day care. Married to Bill Smith, a Madison lawyer and alder, and appointed to the Governor's Commission on the Status of Women, Betty Smith's political life began before she herself was elected to council. Her papers reflect that involvement through her husband's campaign, fair housing, and other issues. Personal reminiscences can be found interspersed in the General and Political Files. The Political Files also relate to her successful alder campaigns in the 19th Ward (1973-1979), her unsuccessful run for mayor of Madison in 1979, and her work with the city council on the Civic Center and State Street Mall. The Senate Files contain materials from her state Senate campaigns in 1972 and 1976, including press releases, political addresses, notes for speeches and issue stances.
