Abstract:
Papers, 1950-1999 (bulk 1996-1999), of Milwaukee reporter and Pulitzer Prize winner Margo Huston, documenting her career in journalism at the Waukesha Freeman and the Milwaukee Journal. Huston also served two terms on the National News Council, a watchdog organization that issued opinions on complaints involving the national media. The bulk of the collection contains information about the implementation of the welfare reform program Wisconsin Works (W-2) in Milwaukee County, with an emphasis on childcare issues.

Scope and Content Note

The papers consist of research notes, writings, clippings, interviews, and awards from her career in journalism at the Waukesha Freeman and the Milwaukee Journal. As a reporter, Huston covered issues such as Medicare, homelessness, welfare reform, abortion, and alternatives to nursing homes (for which she was awarded the Pulitzer in 1977). The cassette tapes contain recorded interviews with W-2 recipients, case workers, daycare providers, and politicians. Interviewees are generally identified only by first name, and the tapes are largely undated. The papers also include drafts of two unpublished books about homelessness. The photographs in the collection primarily document Huston at work.
