Prior to being elected to the Wisconsin Legislature, Rude worked as a researcher in the Iowa Senate and an administrative assistant in the Wisconsin Senate. When Rude ran for the Wisconsin Assembly in 1982, he was a communications specialist at The Trane Company.

He was elected Representative from Vernon, Crawford, and part of Grant County and in 1984, in a special election, Rude was elected to the Wisconsin Senate representing the 32nd Senate District where he served until 2000. While in public service, Rude earned a M.A. in public administration and public policy from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1994.

Rude resigned from the Senate on May 25, 2000 when he accepted the position of Vice-President, External and Member Relations at Dairyland Power Cooperative.
