Biography/History

Friedrich Adolph Meissner was a German immigrant who came to America in 1845. He farmed in New York, Massachusetts, and Florida before settling in Cashton, Monroe County, Wisconsin. In Wisconsin he established a seed business in addition to his farming operation, and he served as town clerk, postmaster, and justice of the peace.

Scope and Content Note

The Meissner Papers consist of a number of letters (primarily family correspondence and primarily written in German), letterbooks of outgoing correspondence, diaries, personal account books, seed records and two volumes of records with some personal notations kept by Meissner when he was Justice of the Peace. Entries in the justice dockets are in English, but many entries in the other volumes are in German. The collection includes a translation (in paper and electronic form) prepared by Loren P. Meissner of the German language letters.
