Scope and Content Note

Records of the Board of Supervisors, 1854-1937, clerk, 1854-1971, treasurer, 1854-1900, Board of Health, 1899-1906, and Justice of the Peace, 1855-1857.

The bulk of the series consists of Clerk's Record books (1854-1871) containing proceedings of annual town meetings and meetings of the Board of Supervisors; reports of receipts and disbursements; record of oaths of office and bonds of officials and, in some cases, chattel mortgage records, school district maps, and school district statistics. Matters considered include highway district concerns, liquor license applications, school district business, and the levy of taxes.

Highway records (1854-1937) typically contain district supervisor's warrants (tax rolls), petitions and orders laying out or altering highways including legal descriptions of the route, field notes of surveys, and grievances regarding highways.

Treasurer's ledgers and account books (1854-1915) contain accounts of receipts and disbursements for school districts, specific fund accounts, and individuals.

The Land Sales volume (1858-1861) gives the legal description and date of sale for land in the towns of Onalaska, Campbell, Jackson, and Neshonoc. Other sections of the volume contain tax certificates including the legal land description plus school district and road district of the property, and tax certificates redeemed which include the legal land description, owner's name, and amount.

Miscellaneous records include ordinances (1872-1873), school district related records (1858-1860), chattel mortgages (1855-1879), lists of names of registered voters (1865-1879), burial permits (1899-1906), and a Justice of the Peace docket (1855-1859) pertaining primarily to civil cases, some criminal cases, and a few marriages.
