Abstract:

Papers include general correspondence, 1857-1957, pertaining to inspection of schools, distribution of state aids, compliance with state statutes regarding education, vacant teaching positions and the hiring of replacements; annual reports of the Board of Education and the Superintendent of Schools containing financial statements and occasional information on enrollment, the courses of study, textbooks used, and the number and qualifications of teachers; school censuses, 1865, 1887-1916, which list the names of parents, the names and ages of children between ages 4 and 20 living in the district, and the number of children enrolled in public and private schools for at least 12 weeks; petitions requesting a return to the ordinary district system of school government, 1916, a referendum on annexing certain areas to the school district, 1951, and additional band instruction, n.d.; and a small amount of correspondence regarding the computation and collection of tuition for non-resident students.
