Abstract:
Files including records of territorial courts of the area of southern Wisconsin formerly in Saint Clair County, Territory of Illinois; Crawford County, Territory of Michigan; and Iowa County, Territory of Wisconsin. Papers include correspondence, inquests, transcripts of testimony, writs, tax lists, applications for licenses, memoranda of accounts, receipts for arms issued in the Blackhawk War, manumissions of slaves, naturalization papers, and other records. Included are papers concerning James D. Doty, Moses M. Strong, Henry C. Dodge, William S. Hamilton, Morgan L. Martin, and Zachary Taylor. Most documents are dated prior to 1848 and only one folder is dated 1859-1868. All materials are also available on microfilm (Iowa Micro Series 19); six items were separately filmed as Iowa Micro Series 4.

Scope and Content Note: Certification licensing Jacob Kolbe “to preach the Gospel of Christ, as a probationer for the holy ministry” (1855), clerk's statement that a judgment against Moses Strong is “Unsatisfied” (1859), and report of a committee that decided after “careful examination” that J.F. Dunn was qualified to practice before the court (1868).

Scope and Content Note: Contains a section of a Michigan Territory Act providing for the specific location of Doty's court (undated), a power of attorney (1827), two court dockets (1825 and 1833), a complaint to the sheriff stating that two men escaped jail “through the bad conduct and neglect of your deputy” (1829), a letter concerning legal business (1835), and some miscellaneous papers concerning fees.

Mineral Point Citizens' Meetings, 1831-1835
Scope and Content Note: Contains minutes of a Whig Caucus (1831), copies of resolutions directing “inhabitants individually to cleanse their yards about their houses, thereby contributing to the good health of the place” and appointing a committee to help preserve the peace (1835), and a notice to the citizens that a federal land office clerk will hold a meeting to listen to complaints growing out of what may have been “great fraud - in the entry of Mineral lands.” (undated).
