Biography/History
Lee W. Metzner grew up in Kewaunee, Wisconsin and graduated from Kewaunee High School in 1899. After graduating, Metzner worked for the State Bank of Kewaunee and subsequently enrolled in the University of Wisconsin in Madison where he received a degree in finance in 1904. He married Mabel Arpin in 1909 and had one son, Charles. In 1919, after many years of banking experience, Metzner became Chairman of the Board at a bank in Casco, Wisconsin. He was also an amateur historian and many of his articles appeared in The Kewaunee Enterprise and other local publications. He principally wrote about Wisconsin history, telling the stories of early Kewaunee settlers and the history of Casco.
Scope and Content Note
The collection consists of correspondence, Metzner's writings, genealogical materials, journals, and photographs. The correspondence (1882-1980) consists of letters in response to Metzner's articles in The Kewaunee Enterprise, miscellaneous business correspondence, and personal letters to family and friends. His writings principally consist of articles written for The Kewaunee Enterprise concentrating on the early pioneer days in Kewaunee as well as a history of Casco. The genealogical materials consist of personal ephemera such as wedding documents and report cards as well as a genealogy of the Metzner family, a family history told by Lee Metzner, and obituaries. The journals (1938-1964, some gaps) were written in almost daily by Metzner and describe his daily activities, his projects, and current events. Also included is one travel journal from Metzner's European trip taken in the summer of 1964. Finally, there are photographs which include images from his history of Casco as well as photographs of family, friends, tombstones, buildings, and other miscellaneous images in and around the Casco area.
