Biography/History

Eldred Klauser was a member of the politically important Eldred family of Milwaukee, which was instrumental in the early history of the Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Co. Eldred Klauser was born in March 1888. He was educated at the Milwaukee Academy.

In the summer of 1911, he began working for the Anson Eldred Co., Stiles, Wisconsin, as a farm manager. When he arrived, Klauser found the farm in extremely poor condition, and having lost money for many years. While it is not known whether Klauser ever studied agriculture in college as he intended, he frequently sent queries to the agriculture professors at the University of Wisconsin. During the 1920's, Klauser became secretary of the Anson Eldred Lumber Co., Stiles, Wisconsin.

Scope and Content Note

Eldred Klauser's correspondence consists of business letters from the agriculture departments of a few universities, concerning farm questions, and from the King Construction Co. and the Pfau Manufacturing Co., regarding construction of a greenhouse. Personal letters are mainly from his mother, 1911-1912, and from relatives and friends. Also included are a few of Klauser's narrative and financial progress reports of the Stiles farm, 1911-1912, an invitation to buy fresh vegetables at prices comparable to those in grocery stores, and very fragmentary financial records, most related to construction of the greenhouse. Family memorabilia consists of a partial personal diary, awards, clippings, invitations, programs, announcements, and ribbons, collected by Klauser and other relatives.

The photographs depict the exterior and interiors of the Eldred-Klauser family home in Milwaukee, family members and others (including photos of some participating in amateur theatricals), and scenes of family and friends taken at Wisconsin Dells. There are also post cards and a sketchbook of the “effect of Spanish American War on Eldred, 10 years old, 1898.”

Related Material

Klauser's school records (contracts, order books, and treasurer's book) from District 5, Town of Freedom, Outagamie County, were separated to the public records section of the Archives Division.
