Biography/History

In 1868, after nearly twenty years of religious services held by traveling priests at private residences and boats, Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church was founded at Marinette, Wisconsin. The name of the Church was inspired by the celebrated medical cures alleged to have taken place at Lourdes, France. A school was opened in 1876, and in 1921 the Holy Name Society and the Society of St. Vincent de Paul were organized. Through the years, French, Polish and German-speaking parishes were established in Marinette, and in 1958 rezoning of the boundaries of the city's parishes was undertaken. The new parish of Lourdes was formed July 1, 1958 and an extensive fund-raising drive culminated in the dedication of a new church and buildings on June 19, 1960.

Scope and Content Note

The collection is fragmentary. The records do not present a complete picture of the activities of the church, its leaders and members. Instead, they reflect the interests and involvement of the creator of the collection, Robert P. Mitchell, C.P.A. The papers have been divided into five categories: Financial Records, Church Publications, Holy Name Society Records, Parochial School Papers, and Personal Correspondence of Robert P. Mitchell.

The Financial Records include parish financial statements, 1953, 1956-1964, and financial papers of Marinette Catholic High School, 1961-1964. An additional folder of fragmentary miscellaneous church financial records, 1958-1961, is also present.

Church Publications, 1959-1965, provide a view of church activities, with heavy emphasis on the building of new facilities in 1959. Included are church building fund “Appeal News Notes,” monthly newsletters, parish bulletins and miscellany. Among the printed publications are a booklet commemorating the first use of the new church, Christmas 1959, and a pamphlet entitled A Miracle at Lourdes, referring to the Marinette church.

The Holy Name Society Records, 1961-1962, include documents listing financial and membership information.

Parochial School Papers, 1961-1966, contain miscellaneous and fragmentary papers on school activities from Our Lady of Lourdes School and Marinette Catholic Central High School.

The Personal Correspondence of Robert P. Mitchell, 1964-1965, deals with local issues introducing him as parish treasurer and active lay worker in the church. Mitchell also audited the financial records of the church, participated in fund-raising for the building program, and edited a number of church publications.
