Biography/History
The Barron County Teachers Training School opened 1907 in the former Rice Lake High School building. The name was later changed to Barron County Normal School and operated until 1960/1961 when the building was torn down. The school was relocated and was renamed the Barron County Teachers College. Due to declining enrollment the school was officially closed in 1967.
For information on County Normal Schools' origin and nature, organization, powers and duties, see The Wisconsin Historical Records Survey, Division of Community Service Programs, Work Projects Administration, County Government in Wisconsin, Volume III, Madison, Wisconsin, 1942.
Scope and Content Note
This series consists primarily of Board minutes, financial records, annual reports, administrative records, teachers' registers and class photos. The Board meeting minutes cover most of the life of the school, 1907-1962. As well as receipts and disbursements, the financial records include annual reports to the State Superintendent of Schools, 1908-1964. These reports give enrollment statistics, number of volumes in library, list of extra-curricular activities, receipts and disbursements and other financial information and later reports also detail the salaries and qualifications of the principal and teachers.
The administrative records include the land indenture drawn up at the establishment of the school, the resume of F.H. Hake, long-time principal, and contracts between the college and the Golden Valley School Board allowing college students to practice teach Golden Valley elementary students in a "model school" or "demonstration school" arrangement. Correspondence from the 1940s includes an exchange with the State Superintendent's office about closing the school due to low enrollment.
The five blueprints, 1927 and 1948, were created to show the HVAC systems and the four undated drawings on waxed linen paper were created to show the airflow. The value of the blueprints and drawings is that they show the rooms of the college and their intended use.
The library accession books consist of the titles of books acquired by the college.
An inventory of the school's equipment and furnishings was conducted in 1946 to comply with the Department of Public Instruction requirements. It is a very detailed list of every item in the building at the time.
The teachers' registers include a list of the students and attendance records. Some of the volumes include the students' date of birth, name of parents, and address. The majority of the registers are for classes taught to the college students, 1907-1962, but four of the registers are for the model school, 1929-1951.
Photographs are of the Classes of 1908-1910, 1923, 1927-1928, 1949 and undated. Most photos include the names of the students.
