Abstract:

A selection of short documentary and educational films from Libya, originally part of the Madison Public Library's collection. Most of the films are in Arabic; some films are in English or include English subtitles. These short documentary films depict the cultural traditions and industrial progress of Libya, often with a propagandist tone. Some were created by the Libyan government to train citizens on farming practices. Though many of the films are undated, they are thought to have been made during the 1970s.

CB 061	[Sources of Life], [undated] Note: Summary: Two dances are performed by the Libyan Folklore Group. For the Jar Dance, three women dance with jars on their heads. A group of men perform the Kaska Dance. Production Company: Libyan Cinema Organization
CB 062	[Ship of the Desert], [undated] Note: Summary: Two men and their camels travel across a desert after their truck gets stuck in the sand. One of their camels leads them to water and they continue to a village. Production Company: Libyan Cinema Organization
CB 063	[Abdullah and the Forest], [undated] Note: Summary: Two young men finish their work in an orange orchard. One drives the oranges away in a truck, while Abdullah goes to the forest to smoke. He falls asleep and the cigarette falls out of his mouth, causing a fire. His family help him extinguish it, but his father chastises him. The following day, Abdullah goes to the city to study agriculture and learns how fertile soil was brought to the desert. He plants seedlings which grow into lush forests, vegetable crops, and pastures for livestock. Abdullah learns how to care for nature, and returns home with a deeper appreciation for the forest.
