Abstract:
Records of the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW), the union formed in 1981 by the merger of the Amalgamated Meat Cutters and the Retail Clerks. Records of these and earlier predecessor organizations are in the Historical Society's custody accessioned under the predecessor organizations' names. Some predecessor organizations' records are currently listed in this collection; they will be transferred to the proper collection when processed. Films and audio recordings produced and distributed for and by UFCW and its predecessor unions including, Amalgamated Meat Cutters and Butcher Workmen of North America, Retail Clerks International Union, Barbers, Beauticians, and Allied Industries International Association, United Packinghouse Workers of America; and the AFL-CIO.

In this episode the Philadelphia Plan is discussed; the plan was intended to increase the number of minorities employed in construction jobs. This episode is moderated by Michael Dukakis. Leonard Davies, guest advocate, argues in favor of expanding the Philadelphia Plan to all federal and federally-assisted construction projects. Davies is joined by James Jones (UW Law Professor) and Herbert Hill (from the NAACP). Howard Miller argues against expanding the plan; he is joined by Donald Clement, Director of the Office of Civil Rights (AFL-CIO), and Bayard Rustin, civil rights leader and Director of the A.
